Madonna of Pity- stained glass panel by Hilary Davies

I was very moved by the events in Gaza and especially the way they affected the lives of the children. That led me to remember how always the children are victims of such atrocities; and the Biblical quote seemed appropriate. At the same time I wanted to make a panel using the image from the ancient seal of Walsingham. This was the genesis of the imagery in this panel.

The Madonna holding her Child is sad. She regards the world and sees the children suffering. Her image is entwined with twisting branches of thorns that will make her Son’s crown. Between the branches are small painted scenes based on newspaper photographs of the time; mothers and fathers hold their afflicted children. We can read the quote,” How often would I have gathered thy children together and ye would not?” We know we must pray for peace
